Abstract

This study examines the spatial distribution of periodic markets in Akko Local Government Area
(LGA), Gombe State, Nigeria, and identifies the crops traded in these markets. Using a mixed
method approach, data were collected from 400 respondents across five major periodic markets
(Kumo, Kashere, Tumu, Tukulma, and Kalshingi) through structured questionnaires and GPS
mapping. Nearest Neighbor Analysis (NNA) was employed to assess market distribution
patterns, while descriptive statistics were used to analyze crop distribution. Results indicate a
dispersed spatial pattern of markets (Nearest Neighbor Ratio = 2.11, p < 0.05), with maize
(28.3%) and rice (20.4%) being the most traded crops. The study highlights the influence of road
accessibility on market patronage and suggests infrastructural improvements to enhance rural
market efficiency.
