Abstract

The study examined the influence of entrepreneurship education in inducing perception and interest
towards self employment among undergraduates in universities of Gombe state. Quasi-experimental
research design was adopted for the study. Four research questions and four hypotheses guided the
study. The population for this study consisted of all the undergraduates of federal and state
universities in Gombe State. The population comprised of 2932 male undergraduates consisting of
64.8% of the total population and 1593 female undergraduates representing 35.1% of the
population. Multi stage sampling was used in selecting samples from the faculties. The sample of
the study consisted of 306 undergraduates sampled from two hundred level students. An instrument
named perception and interest of undergraduates towards Entrepreneurship Education (PIUEED)
was used in collecting data. A Cronbach alpha of .888 was obtained and a Guttman split half
coefficient of .743 was also obtained. Data was analysed using Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and
T test and hypotheses were tested at p=0.05 level of significance Finding of the study include
among others: Entrepreneurship education significantly increases the interest of undergraduates in
universities of Gombe state towards the program as a means of self employment; Undergraduates
from the faculty of science have been found to have higher perception of entrepreneurship
education than those in Arts and education in universities of Gombe state. Therefore, the study
made the following recommendations: Government, parents, nongovernmental organizations and
the society at large should join hands in sustaining the interest of undergraduates towards
entrepreneurship education through the use of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, providing the
undergraduates with a means of starting their own businesses. More attention should be focus on
the Faculties of Education, Arts and social science to see that they participated fully in all the
program of entrepreneurship education.
