TECHNOLOGY SKILLS DEFICIENCY AND THE USE OF NVIVO APPROACH IN THE ANALYSIS OF QUALITATIVE DATA IN SOCIAL SCIENCES IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES

Abstract

The study examines the extent to which Technology Skills
Deficiency affect the Use of NVivo Approach in the
Analysis of Qualitative Data in Social Sciences. The
objectives of the study were: to examine to what extent the
lack of knowledge and skill of applying software affect the
adoption of NVivo in Nigerian Universities; to assess the
extent to which the desire to work as individuals rather
than team members, affect the adoption of NVivo
technique in Nigerian Universities; and to identify how
the NVivo technique ease the muddled, vague and time
consuming task of research in Nigeria. Data were sourced
through on open and close ended questionnaire and were
analyzed using the simple regression and Pearson
correlation co-efficient. Findings revealed that lack of
knowledge and skill in software application affect the rate
and level of adoption of NVivo technique in researches in

Nigerian universities; the sustainable use of the NVivo
software in analyzing qualitative data was majorly
impeded by the absence of technical know-how on the part
of researchers in the universities. Also, the desire to work
as individuals rather than as team members was seen to
have negative effect on the adoption of NVivo technique.
This implies that working in groups will enable the
researchers to ask questions when not clear about the
NVivo software, hence facilitating their adoption but
when working as individuals, such opportunities are not
created and hence making the adoption rate in the use of
the software very low. The study recommends that more
training should be organized for researchers to be
acquainted with the knowledge and skill of NVivo
techniques
