ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECTS OF INSECURITY ON ROAD TRANSPORTATION IN KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

The study assessed the effects of insecurity on road transportation in Kaduna state, Nigeria.
insecurity in Kaduna state has being a major challenge bedeviling the effective functioning of
transport system evidenced by relatively high number of accidents, frequent armed robbery
incidents and a rising wave of kidnapping on most highways. The study adopted a triangulation
method of data gathering techniques. Clustered sampling technique was use for administration of
questionnaire in the study area. One major market in each of the three senatorial zones (Kaduna
North, Central and South) of the state was purposively selected for the study based on popularity
of the markets in terms of volume of economic activities. These markets served as collection centers
for the target population. Both descriptive and inferential statics were used in the data analysis.
The results indicated that three types of insecurities (Kidnapping (26%), Ethnic Attack (24%), and
Religious Attack (18%) are more pronounce in the state. The results of the Correlation indicated
that transportation is negatively affected by kidnapping, ethnic and religious attacks with 6.16%,
10.7% and 8.7% respectively. Equally, the co-efficient of multiple correlations (R) indicated 0.143,
a multiple R square of 0.021 and Adjusted R2=0.012. The study recommended that since the types
of insecurity vary from place to place, understanding the effects of these varied insecurity gives a
room for the adoption of suitable mechanism for tackling the problem. In conclusion, the safety of
transport system, especially our road transports have bedeviled with so many criminal activities
spatially varied across the state.
